Coventry 0-0 Sheffield United

The Sky Blues came into this game off the back of an enthralling win at home to Bristol City before the international break.

Mark Robins made three changes from that game, with full back Todd Kane coming in for the suspended Maatsen; Dom Hyam returned to the starting line-up for the injured Clarke-Salter and Jamie Allen replaced Matty Godden who drops to the bench.

Mark Robins seemed to have his tactics perfectly set up throughout the first half, playing the midfield ‘box’ which served them so well in the League One Championship winning season – O’Hare and Allen either side of Gyokeres up top. Leaving the Sheffield United midfield, no time on the ball.

The start to the game was ‘end to end’ with O’Hare and Gyokeres linking up nicely, just lacking the final shot and former sky blue, John Fleck shooting wide for The Blades.

Ben Sheaf not long after found himself in space on the edge of the box and forced a smart save out of Foderingham who had to push the ball out for a throw in.

City continued with their forward-thinking play, with Sheaf involved again, this time being the provider, setting Gyokeres through on goal who was subsequently pulled down by Ireland international, John Egan. He was yellow carded for his actions.

The resulting free kick was taken by Hamer whose effort went just over the top of the bar.

Mark Robins’ side resumed their control throughout the half, without troubling the Sheffield United goalkeeper too many times.

The home side were booed off at the interval, after not having a shot on target for the entire first half.

The beginning of the second half was more of the same, with Gyokeres forcing another save out of Foderingham, who got down quickly to the snapshot from the Swede.

But the course of the game changed just after the hour mark when the Sky Blues went for the win, bringing on two strikers in Matty Godden and Tyler Walker. The former was straight into the action with a first time shot stinging the hands of Foderingham after a through ball from O’Hare.

The Blades pressure started to build, with multiple shots from outside the box sailing just past Moore’s goal. Along with another former Sky Blue, McGoldrick spurning a golden chance after being put through on goal and at an angle, blazed it over the bar.

Not long after, Moore made a stunning save to deny the lively Morgan Gibbs-White.

Coventry brought back a point to the Midlands, after a battling performance in South Yorkshire.

City next face former landlords, Birmingham City at the CBS Arena on 23rd November 2021.
