New Community Centre brightens future for Warwick:

A local charity has been set up in Warwick to help fundraise for a new community centre, although the small Packmores centre is already there, it lacks in size and facilities. Community is needed – whether that’s partaking in events, supporting small businesses or simply helping your neighbour, we can all appreciate how important it is. The planning permission has been granted, sharing on Facebook the charity wrote ‘our centre will be a much-needed space for the residents of Packmores estate and beyond’.

Warwick town and its residents already take community very seriously, with weekly markets held in the town to support local businesses as well as annual events such as Victorian evening, The mop funfair and the many music events that take place at the wonderful local castle. It goes without saying that this community centre is extremely overdue and will be appreciated by the many residents.

The planning permission comes in a staggering twenty-five years after the need was initially identified, it’s a huge milestone to achieve, Simon Pargeter, the local town councillor for Warwick Saltisford states ‘Hard work and persistence lay the foundation, but sustaining and building on that success requires even greater focus’.

The hard work and determination to have this planning permission granted is evident throughout the passion that the locals have and, the support the local community have given. ‘The need for properly run and welcoming community centres is on the increase in our town’ wrote one resident under a Facebook post on the Warwick Town Noticeboard. The desire for this new hub fuels hope that it will becoming a blossoming, thriving environment.

The new charity set up is called ‘priory pools community centre’ and its being built with hopes it will become a busy hub linking both the Packmores Estate and Priory Park, this area of Warwick has been identified by the council as an area that would greatly benefit from a community centre, the new space will hold many different facilities such as a hall for events and activities, meeting rooms and even a community café.

The charity work close in hand with another local charity ‘The Gap’ which has been running the small centre, which is already there, has been helping with the new Priory Pools charity to find a suitable location, design plans and gather support from the community.

The change this will bring for locals is extraordinary, the support for specific groups including new mums, the elderly and providing space for youth clubs means the relationship locals have with each other is set to flourish.

The fundraising is now beginning, with hopes to raise £2 Million needed for building costs, Janette Eslick the community centre trustee and lead fundraiser is calling on ‘everyone in Warwick to support the fundraising’. There is no doubt we will see an influx in local events to support the cause and raise money, and together, we can help build a brighter, more inclusive future for Warwick.

The holiday season in Coventry is about to get a whole lot more magical as the Coventry Christmas Market returns to Broadgate in the heart of the city centre. Starting on Friday, November 15th, and running until Sunday, January 5th, 2025. Offering festive activities for visitors of all ages. Opening Daily from 11 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m., the market caters for everyone.

The Christmas Market is a Coventry city staple. Drawing people from across Warwickshire and Coventry to enjoy the mix of foods, gifts, and entertainment. Whether you are hunting for unique last-minute gifts or simply enjoying the atmosphere, the market is back for the festive season. The last-minute gift opportunities for those tricky family members can be solved with the range of gift stalls. From Christmas artisanal goods to handmade jewellery, the market is ideal for thoughtful gifts for your loved ones.

Coventry City Centre has car parking opportunities within a 10-minute walking radius if you are planning to visit the market. The West Orchards carpark is an approximate 2-minute walk from the town square, making the market easily accessible.

Coventry’s 100 ft wheel has made a reappearance this year, despite critiques from customers last year. The wheel has been described to show Coventry’s skyline, however, all that was seen by customers last year was the lacklustre view of the top of retail buildings.

Coventry City Council are promoting late-night shopping in the town centre and Fargo village.  Offering free parking after 3 pm. Giving people who may have late afternoon or work commitments the opportunity to engage and purchase festive merchandise from local businesses throughout Warwickshire and Coventry.

Night-time lantern trail held in Coventry’s cemetery

8/11/2024

Written by Laura Lallana

London Road Cemetery in Coventry is hosting the Night Time Menagerie, which marks the end of a two year programme of arts, history and wellbeing funded by the Heritage Fund.

The guided trail is a one mile long performance that uses illuminated installations and puppets to tell stories about the cemetery, its ‘occupants’ and their encounters with animals. The trail will be led by two ‘residents’ of the cemetery called Ellen and William who passed away after shocking encounters with animals.

Jennie Rutte, of History Coventry Trust, which manages the engagement programme said this was the perfect finale of the event because it showcases the huge research work done by volunteers about the residents of the cemetery.

Audience will experience the Night Time Menagerie in timed slots from 5.30pm to 9pm and it would last up to 30 minutes. It is recommended to bring torches to help the public guide their way since it may be darker in some places even though the trail will be lit.  The show is suitable for children older than 5 since it contains themes of animal and human death.

The Night Time Menagerie’s creation was possible thanks to the collaboration od Historic Coventry Trust with the Fabularium Theatre Company. The artwork has been designed by artists Pippa Church and Joff Cafer with the support of Coventry University students. Puppets and lanterns have been made by Flawed Mandrake Theatre, Historic Coventry Trust volunteers and students from Coventry University.

The programme has been funded by the National Lottery Heritage and Coventry City Council.

Homelessness in the West Midlands reaches a new demand

High levels of homelessness in this country are shocking and a damning indictment of the amount of people who fall on hard times. Since 2023, homelessness has risen by 27% resulting in how Prime Minister Kier Starmer will have a major task of tackling rising levels of homelessness and rough sleeping due to the pressure that this is putting on public services. Political parties are at the heart of controlling homelessness to a certain extent in the sense of having the power to get people’s lives back on the right track.

Therefore, political parties such as the conservations have pledged to deliver 1.6 million homes with various measures to unblock housebuilding. They plan to implement several measures around social housing eligibility, including legislating for new Local Connection and UK connection tests. They want to introduce a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ expectation of social landlords for anti-social behavior which, something similar has been tested before.

Five thousand families in the West Midlands are currently living in temporary accommodation with no permanent home because there’s a lack of affordable housing. Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council Sharon Thompson stated, “You have to tackle it from both sides, prevention and crisis, to achieve more effective results.” The West Midlands has an ethos that is designing out homelessness, which means supporting those who are already in crisis by trying to put things in place that will help with early intervention and prevention. People are driven into homelessness due to unaffordable rent increases and find themselves unable to move on from temporary or supported accommodation as there is nowhere to go and the demand is so high.

If voted in the Liberal Democrats planned to increase the building of new homes to 380,000 a year across the UK, including 150,000 social homes a year. They will immediately ban no-fault evictions, make three-year tenancies the default, and create a national register of licensed landlords.

The number of homeless people living in Coventry is through the roof, with the figure being at around nine thousand. Caron Williams, Chief Executive at Coventry Cyrenians, stated, “People don’t realise that homelessness is, by degree, insufficient social housing that has been built by numerous governments and councils.” As the population has grown in Coventry, sections have dropped out of housing options, meaning that some people will be looking to move outside of the local arena into somewhere with more housing opportunities like Rugby.

The perception of homeless people in the public must be hard for those people, living rough because of the stigma around that needs to change for more people to receive support. The circumstances people find themselves under will be different for everybody, so judging somebody from the outside looking in is hard because you will never know the full picture of what each homeless person went through. The government, alongside third-party charities, will need to implement new strategies by focusing on both housing solutions and rough sleepers if they want to bring the numbers down in the West Midlands.
