It is safe to say that there are many benefits to upcycling and there are a lot of good points. The sustainable fashion sector is providing an active solution to the issues arising due to fast fashion such as:
1. Improved work environment
When investigating the pros and cons of sustainably sourcing clothes, It is not possible to look past the fact that generally, sustainable fashion companies are providing more ethical working environments. From providing transparent supply chains to complying with independent audits, sustainable fashion brands tend to advocate for their worker’s rights and safety Campaigns such as #whomademyclothes have gone the extra mile in promoting a fairer industry, and for the most part, sustainable brands are leading this charge.
2. A greener wardrobe = greener planet
The fashion industry has long been associated with environmental degradation, from water pollution to excessive carbon emissions. Sustainable fashion offers a remedy. Milk Vintage Clothing in Coventry is a second-hand vintage store that advocates for people to upcycle clothing they already own or would like to purchase. Naomi Jandio, a 21-year-old advisor said, “I’m pro sustainable fashion and I think it’s important that we are not using fast fashion a lot unless we need to plus we are recycling old clothes because they are cool to wear”.
Naomi added how “It’s becoming cool to go to charity shops because I remember when I was a kid everyone would make fun of you like oh you have a charity shop jumper on, but now it’s cool to be different and find new pieces”.
Sustainable fashion isn't just a moral imperative; it's a strategic move that fosters economic growth, creates jobs, and ensures the long-term sustainability of brands committed to eco-friendly practices. Moreover, the economic benefits extend beyond the immediate gains, as brands embracing eco-friendly practices are positioning themselves for long-term sustainability.
Joshua Fell-Gordon, a 21-year-old aspiring brand designer, evoked how “ Sustainable fashion is the only way to proceed forward without denting our carbon footprint more”. Fell-Gordon added, “ The issue now is that because upcycling is gaining more popularity, the prices are weirdly increasing as it’s seen as more of a trend”.
