At just 20 years old, Molly Roberts is carving a path for herself in the world of music. A singer-songwriter from Leighton Buzzard, now studying at Coventry University, Molly's journey is one of passion, perseverance, and personal growth. A Creative Spark from the Start

Molly’s love for music began at a young age. “I’ve always been a very creative person,” she shares. “I started making art when I was young, but I was always drawn to songwriting. I wrote my first songs at 12, though, honestly, they weren’t very good. Of course, my mother thought they were amazing.”

Her musical journey took a pivotal turn when she joined a musical theatre youth group after experiencing bullying in middle school. “That was a really tough time for me,” she admits. “But joining the group changed my whole life. Performing in shows, singing—it really grew my love for music.” She pursued music academically, studying it for GCSEs and A-Levels, eventually leading her to university to hone her skills further.

Musical Inspirations

When asked about her biggest influences, Molly lights up. “I’d say Lizzy McAlpine. Her style is very similar to mine and really inspired my latest song. I also love Harry Styles—he’s such an incredible artist. And I enjoy folk and indie music, as well as artists like Ariana Grande. I guess I just like anything that resonates with me.”

Overcoming Challenges

While music has been a source of comfort, it has also come with its challenges. “My anxiety has been a big hurdle,” Molly reveals. “Ironically, it’s what led me to start my musical journey, but it also made me terrified of performing. The fear of playing my own songs in front of people was overwhelming.”

Over time, however, Molly has worked hard to push past her fears. “That first time performing an original song in front of a crowd is terrifying. But once you do it, you realize you can keep getting better. I feel much more confident on stage now.”

The Thrill of Performing

Despite initial nerves, performing is an experience Molly cherishes. “The adrenaline rush is incredible,” she says. “I always get nervous before going on stage—everyone does. But the moment I start playing, everything else fades away. It’s especially powerful when I’m performing a song with deeply personal lyrics. It’s so different from covering another artist’s work.”

Music: A Lifelong Love Affair

For Molly, music is more than just a career path—it’s an essential part of who she is. “It means everything to me. Even when I’m not singing, I’m constantly listening to music. It’s a part of my everyday life. I never imagined I’d be studying music at university, but here I am. And musical theatre has always held a special place in my heart—I’ve been to so many West End shows, and they inspire me every time.”

Shaping Identity Through Music

Molly believes music has played a huge role in shaping her confidence and outlook on life. “I used to be extremely insecure and anxious, and I still struggle with that. But performing has helped me grow so much. Being on stage makes you vulnerable, and the idea that people are watching and judging you is daunting. But getting past that fear has made me stronger.”

Behind the Music: The Story of 'Unravel Me'

Molly’s latest song, Unravel Me, was born out of a casual coffee shop brainstorming session with a lecturer. “I was struggling to find a concept, so we sat down and talked through different ideas. We came up with about ten, and Unravel Me stood out. The idea of ‘unraveling’ can mean so many things. For me, it’s about wanting to start a relationship but also loving independence and fearing stepping out of your comfort zone. The lyrics came easily once I had the theme.”
