The musician died after falling from a third-story balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
An autopsy confirmed the singer suffered internal and external bleeding as well as multiple traumatic injuries sustained because of the fall. Early toxicology reports found the artist had multiple substances in his system when he died. Prosecutors in Argentina said that Payne had traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in his system.
In many interviews Payne told interviewers that had found his newfound success difficult to deal with and often reached to alcohol and substances as a way to cope. Popular music lecturer Dr Rich Hall said his opinion on the topic of the use of substance abuse in the music industry. Social media often “feeds addiction rather than help which we wouldn’t have seen in popstars fifteen years ago, there needs to be safeguarding in place or a professional organisation to help those new to the industry.
Payne is just one of the young stars lost in recent years. Payne was one of the most recognisable names in pop, and for certain left a legacy after his time with One Direction . Payne is survived by his parents, his two older sisters, and his son, Bear, aged seven.
