In recent years, the music industry has undergone a dramatic transformation. Emerging genres, tools and creativity are reshaping the musical landscape, with young and eager independent artists at the forefront. With the emergence of tools such as social media, creating music has now become more accessible than ever, with many artists kickstarting their careers by producing and sharing their music online.

However, this rise in upcoming talent also means more competition, making it harder for young artists to break through and get noticed, with many musicians giving up before they've even got started.

First-year music students, Harry Bliss and Charlotte Muryne share their experiences and advice for other music enthusiasts looking for inspiration.

Despite their very different musical styles, Charlotte and Harry share a common passion for experimentation and creativity.

For 19-year-old Charlotte Muryne, music has always played a significant role in her life. “I’ve always written small songs, ever since I was young, but I never fully became interested in music until I discovered the genres I wanted to explore.” This turning point opened up a whole new world for Charlotte and her musical journey. Like many emerging artists, Charlotte uses tools like GarageBand to develop melodies and experiment with composing music.

Charlotte's musical style and compositions are shaped by her diverse instrumental abilities. She plays a range of instruments, including the violin, ukulele, and guitar, and has skilled vocals from her background in choir singing. This variety helps Charlotte stand out in terms of skills and composition, and her commitment to maintaining versatility allows her to create both dynamic and innovative pieces.

She emphasises the importance of education when it comes to crafting music. So far her course offers opportunities such as being able to work with orchestral arrangements, incorporating instruments like violin, cello, bugle horn and trumpet to craft a distinctive sound. “I always try to add something that's a bit different, so for example, the song I'm doing today is meant to be performed with several harmonies on the top, because that's my favourite thing to do.”
Having particular passions for aspects such as vocal harmonies and unique arrangements helps to make Charlottes creativity really shine through and is a great way to be able to produce truly original pieces.

Harry Bliss

For 21-year-old Harry Bliss, music has been on an evolving journey, with his roots deeply embedded in hip hop and underground rap.

“It kind of all started from being into hip hop and underground rap, and then it kind of ventured off into a lot of different experimentations with some other genres as well. So I like experimenting with ambient music, dance music, and pop music.”

This openness to experimentation with such a wide variety of genres has led Harry to create a diverse musical style that blends multiple influences. Although primarily a producer, Harry also sings and raps over his own beats, mixing and crafting original tracks.

“I'm more of a producer, so I make a lot of my own beats, and then I sort of sing/rap over the top of them and do the mixing for it, and then other aspects of creation as well, So I like doing the music videos for it.’

Harry's interest in helping with the media aspect of his music is crucial, as aspiring artists should aim to immerse themselves in every aspect of their creative process. By taking part in the visual side of his work, Harry understands the importance of crafting a brand image that complements his music.

Harry believes in the importance of not taking yourself too seriously and being open to constructive criticism. He encourages fellow artists to create frequently and embrace all feedback in order to improve. “I wish I was a lot more open to hearing criticism and learning what’s not so great about my music. So I think just be prolific as well and just create a lot. Let other people give you criticism on it and learn from it.”
