The Rise of Coventry’s Beauty Industry
Coventry, a city known for its lively culture and long history, is also emerging as an economic hub for expanding beauty companies. The beauty industry in Coventry has grown significantly over the last ten years as more people start to create ideas of how to earn income and turn their passion into profitable self-employed businesses. The personal care and beauty industry contributed £27.2 billion to the UK's GDP in 2023, according to reports from the British Beauty Council and Oxford Economics. The hair and beauty industry alone also contributed £8.5 billion to the UK economy in 2023. The UK's beauty industry has expanded quickly and now contributes billions of pounds to economic growth yearly. This demonstrates how jobs that once seemed meaningless are now contributing to the country's development.
Industry reports predict that the UK beauty industry will continue to expand due to its high demand. This development can be seen in Coventry, where independent beauty businesses are thriving as a result of a being able to use of social media to their advantage as its free marketing and consumers desire for outstanding services. Numerous individuals in Coventry have made successful livelihoods for themselves by using their talents in beauty. I spoke to Agata Trzesniewska age 23 who is a business owner of a beauty company called Agzbeautyuk which she is also known for being an award-winning lash/brow technician.

During the interview Agata talks about how she began her journey and the real struggles she faced, this was due to creating a business from scratch and not just that as she started building her career from the age of 17. This is when she had taken her first eyelash course she said, “I was working from home at the time in the back of my room and I started off doing my mum’s friends lashes I had to start somewhere”. Today Agata operates her own beauty studio not just doing eyelashes but over the years she has broaden her skills as she now offers teeth whitening, semi-permanent makeup and even HD eyebrow/lamination.
Agata talks about how social media played a big part of her being successful, as this was a way of creating a strong clientele as she could post her own advertisement she says, “staying consistent with posting is a way I caught my audience’s attention and was a form of growing my page as I was being more noticed”. Especially nowadays everyone is on social media so news spreads quick, Beauty companies have adjusted to the tastes of current consumers, as digital booking platforms and virtual consultations have grown in popularity. Customers can now more easily make appointments thanks to online scheduling tools, and beauty bloggers and influencers are still capturing their audience and setting trends.
Many like Agata have grown over the years and have become much more skilled this is so they can expand their company and have a wider audience as Agata says “Instead of working for a chain, I knew I wanted to work for myself. It took a lot of dedication, but now that I have my own business, I hope to encourage others to do the same as it was the best decision I've ever made. I've come to realise that pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone can help you succeed in life”. Agata’s story is inspiring to many as she explains the struggles she’s been through and how not everything has gone to plan in her life. she’s honest and that’s what makes her story more worthy as she’s not sugarcoating to people who want to know the truth of starting a business.

The UK beauty and personal care market is expected to expand by 3.5% a year between 2023 and 2028, according to Statista. This consistent rise reflects the continued need for top-notch beauty services, especially from younger generations who place greater importance on appearance and self-care. Although Coventry's beauty industry is flourishing, managing a business is not simple. Financial difficulties are just one of the many challenges faced by independent beauty professionals. Establishing a beauty business all their investments go into products, equipment, and training, unlike corporate jobs. Many business owners in the beauty industry begin with limited money and must reinvest their earnings in order to grow their companies.
I spoke to nail technician Archchana Muraleethran who has her own nail business at the age 21 her brand is called Luxebeautyloungexo which is home based I asked Archchana why she ran her business from home she said “by running my business from home its giving me the ability to save as nowadays rent prices have increased due to the cost of living it’s much better if I can save and create an outdoor conservatory which will have the same facility as a studio”. Many beauticians have created this form of way to save money as it’s hard to start a business on little savings as many do. Not many consider the prices of the beauty treatments Archchana gave me a brief pricing of how much It could roughly be to start a nail business, and I must say beauticians don’t receive enough credit of how much they really have to put in just shows how theses successful business had to go through hardship to see a brighter future.

However, it’s just not financial struggles that are negative of starting a business but also to create a strong clientele is the real key to success, Archchana says, “when I first started I didn’t know if I was going to attract clients but as soon as I started posting my work getting my friends and family to share it help build my clientele as word of mouth is how beauty businesses are noticed by the public”. By using social media is a way of helping small business to be noticed as everyone uses it so it’s just the best form of way to promote your brand. It can be challenging to stand out in Coventry's quickly expanding beauty industry.
To stand out from the competition, business owners need to identify their unique selling proposition either this can be having new products or offering discounts as everyone loves a cheeky bargain. Overall businesses will be growing and creating more impact over the next years, lets see which ones will succeed and achieve their goals.
