Coventry gets in the Christmas mood

Coventry Council has released three major initiatives to get people into Coventry City Centre during the Christmas season. The council has teamed up with business leaders and Visit Coventry to increase visitors as traders battle the cost-of-living crisis and the aftermath of the pandemic.

We are two weeks away from welcoming Coventry’s very own Winter Wonderland in the heart of Coventry City Centre, as well as The Coventry Christmas Market!

Winter Wonderland will be starting on Friday 25th November and lasting till Saturday 8th January, it will be opening a Christmas ice rink and the market will be open at Broadgate for all visitors.

Coventry City Council has partnered with Coventry Business Improvement Districts and Visit Coventry to bring joy and Christmas spirit to residents and visitors.

You can expect lots of Christmas music and food stands to get you in the holiday mood.

Coventry Council hopes this Winter Wonderland promotion brings in lots of visitors and encourages local people to support the city centre.

Councillor Patricia Heatherton, the Cabinet Member for City Services to Coventry City: we appreciate that everyone is living with challenges around the cost of living at the moment, and the knock-on effects that may be having on traders and businesses as well as residents.”

Prices for Winter Wonderland start from £10.50 for a child and adult tickets start at £13.00. Group bookings are also available for schools.

Coventry resident, Lauren Hall says “It looks very Christmassy, and it’s my favourite time of the year. I’m hoping I can go there on a date, and have a bit of fun, I think it’ll be very wholesome. It seems fairly affordable for university students too.”

And that’s not all! The annual Christmas lights switch-on will also take place at Broadgate on November 15th. The ceremony is expected to start at 5:30om and end at 8 pm. Local artists are expected to play as well as a visit from Santa Claus.

Stalls at the Christmas Market will be selling things like wine, BBQ, Crepes, and much more!

Sophia Dukhota went to last year’s Christmas Market in Coventry and said: “It was small and quaint, you could see everything in a matter of minutes, maybe 10 if you were really looking. The best part was the fire pit where you could roast marshmallows. I wouldn’t specifically seek it out, but I would pop in if I’m in town already.”

Another thing to look forward to this Christmas- Fargo Village on Far Gosford Street is bringing back its Fargo Christmas Markers Market.
