Euro’s 2024 Predictions: What the future holds
It’s going to be sport-tacular summer and with the Euro's fast approaching there are a range of predictions. UEFA Euro 2024 is being held in Germany and it’s the first time the country has hosted since reunification.
Can England finally win some silverware?
ITV Central’s sports correspondent, Daniel Salisbury-Jones has some high hopes for England this year. He thinks that ‘Gareth Southgate really needs to turn the positive atmosphere that he’s got around the England camp and the decent runs that he’s had in tournaments into a trophy.’ Italy was the only team to defeat England in penalty shootouts during the 2021 Euros. The sports correspondent also adds ‘they have probably the best players in the tournament, they have a genuine world class player Jude Bellingham.’
Johnson Gyamfi, a 22-year-old Market Harborough footballer says that England have a good chance of winning as ‘the upcoming talent of Jude Bellingham is killing world football right now.’ The Real Madrid player played for England in the last Euros at 17 years old, becoming England’s third-youngest full international.
Will home advantage work?
Although Dan is optimistic for England, Germany is also one of the teams he is hopeful for: ‘although they’ve underperformed in recent years, they are the home side and that always gives the team an added edge.’
Mr Gyamfi agrees that Germany could possibly win the Euros ‘as they are playing at home in their own country, their fans will be behind them, and they will want to succeed.’ Germany’s football team have been the winners of four World Cups and three European Championships however according to Sports Star there was a ‘steep decline in recent years.’ On September 11, 2023, the German Football Association (DFB) sacked coach Hansi Flick after a 1-4 loss to Japan in an international friendly. This is the first-ever firing of a coach for the men's national team. However, with their recent 2-0 win against France we could be looking at a positive performance from them in the Euro’s.
Euro’s 2024 Group of Hell
The ITV Central worker does have the most doubts about Group B (Spain, Croatia, Italy and Albania.) He says: ‘It wouldn’t surprise me if Italy, despite being the holders at the moment, didn’t make it out of that group.’ Spain has defeated Italy twice in the Nations League final in recent years, so this is a game to watch, and that alone might cause reasons for concerns for Italy.
However, Belgium is the team that the Market Harborough footballer believes will go out first: ‘they do have a good team and the best midfielder in the world Kevin De Bruyne, but I don’t think him alone will be able to carry this team far in this tournament.’
Wild Card
Scotland could ‘very much be one to spring a surprise,’ according to Dan. He says that ‘they’re very capable of causing an upset’ and they ‘are really starting to do some interesting things.’
When is the Euro’s?
Germany will serve as the host nation for the UEFA EURO 2024, which will take place from June 14 to July 14. The event was last held in West Germany in 1988. The team themselves stands in Group A and will take on Scotland in the opening match at the Munich Arena.
