Student fears over safety after nearby nightclub stabbing.

Recent stabbings at a nightclub in Walsall have provoked fear in students in the nearby university town of Coventry.

Valeshas on Newport Street this week saw a man stabbed while clubbing. He later died of his injuries.

Speaking to students at West Midlands universities they said the incident would have an impact on how they perceived their safety.

Vanessa student at Coventry University, said, “that desire to go out and have fun, consciously you are just scared that something may happen at any time”.

A young man said it left him feeling unable to protect himself and this would impact his enjoyment on a night out.

The division between men's and women's risk of violent crime is apparent through statistics, with women frequently subjected to sexual assault, men are more likely to be the victim of violent crime. 2.2% of men will be a victim of violent crime.

One young woman said, “I didn’t feel scared before but maybe it was because of the people I was with, I know if I go in a big group I'll be safe.”

Other students who are not regular clubbers expressed the incident had only confirmed their earlier apprehension, “From past experiences, I don’t feel comfortable being in a club” and now, that was cemented as fear.
