27 Club: Amy Winehouse

The 27 Club is an unfortunate list of celebrities who have died from various causes, all including drugs and substance abuse at that age.

Music fans are aware of this tragic reality, but are also not blind to the fact that multiple artists need them in order for their creative persona to shine and produce the high-quality music that they are known for.

But is it true?

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse, who is known for her hit songs Rehab, Valerie and Back to Black was known to have been taking drugs for a long time and even attended rehab in 2008; stopped using in 2010 but relapsed and died of a confirmed overdose a year later.

Her evident drug addiction influenced her music, with hard hitting lyrics such as “They try to make me go to rehab. I said ‘No, no, no’”. From her documentary, ‘Amy’, it is known that this song is a literal account of her alcohol abuse.

“Daddy thinks I’m fine”, gives the audience a true reasoning behind why she gave up with rehabilitation which led to her death.

One of her main life influences was Fielder-Civil who Winehouse had a consistently on and off relationship with, and even married him. He introduced her to heroin and other hard drugs. Amy once said, “I need to get some headaches goin’ to write about”, proving her creativity and music thrived off her chaotic lifestyle.

Drugs and addiction were the main subject of her music but should be stated that they are not the reason behind the success of them. She was one of the most naturally talented British artists we will ever see.
