A Sudden Change towards Student City?

Coventry was nominated the City of Culture for 2021.

With renovation plans being put into fruition in the city centre: the University is growing both figuratively and physically.

Coventry University is the educational hub for thousands and thousands of students of all different ages, and from around the world. These people need places to live. To fulfil this, the city has continued to build towering accommodation blocks surrounding the city centre.

Coventry as a city is known for its musical heritage, taking credit for the emergence of Two Tone and Ska music in the shape of bands such as Madness and The Specials. This type of music genre fused both traditional Jamaican Ska music along with elements of punk rock. This produced hit songs such as ‘It Must Be Love’ and ‘A Message to You, Rudy’.

Not only this, but the football team representing the city, Coventry City Football Club were instrumental in the current shape of English football, being one of the inaugural members of the Premier League in 1992. As a club, the Sky Blues are most notably known for their infamous FA Cup win in 1987.

Lastly, Coventry was the centre of the British motor industry, with Jaguar and Rover one of many manufacturers to be based in the city. The Transport Museum epitomises the impact this had on the country and the evolution of transport as we know it today.

With all this history being so rich and makes the city what it is now. The question that should be asked is, is accommodating the university students not taking enough consideration to the past endeavours?
