Storm Arwen causes chaos

In words of Shakin Stevens, ‘snow was falling all around me’ this past weekend: causing havoc on the roads, and throughout the sporting world.

One man was even killed during these adverse weather conditions which swept the nation.

In some parts of the UK, there was over 100mph winds, and this was met by a yellow warning for snow, and a separate alert for strong winds. More specifically in the West Midlands.

More than 120 lorries ended up stranded on the M62 overnight due to the conditions; and over 130,000 homes were left without power, in the north-east and Scotland.

Within the footballing world, multiple games were postponed, due to the pitches becoming unplayable. One of the local games which got called off was Bedworth United Ladies vs Leek Town at The Oval.

The game had only been playing for 20 minutes before the referee called a halt to proceedings.

Non-league club, Chester le Street Town FC lost their clubhouse roof, which was blown off in one piece and landed on the pitch. Volunteers at the game grouped together and tried to dismantle the metal and succeeded. But the game did not continue.

Throughout Coventry, the frozen snow on the roads and pavements led to the Met Office warning people in the area of dangerous driving conditions. The Office also stated that “surfaces may become icy in places on Sunday night and early Monday”.
